The Browntown School building, which is now home to the Browntown Community Center Association, is said to have been built between 1906 and 1914. Originally, it contained three classrooms. A fourth classroom was added in 1949. The school closed in 1970. In 2021, the building was named as a Contributing Building in terms of its historical significance in the listing of Browntown on the National Register of Historic Places. As described in Article II of the Association’s bylaws, “The objectives of the BCCA shall be to strengthen fellowship in the community and to provide a place for the adults and youths in the community to use for meetings, recreation and other functions which shall be in the interest of the community as approved by the Executive Board of the BCCA.”
Maintaining a viable community meeting space takes a lot of work. The Association relies on a network of volunteers to plan events and keep things running smoothly. In addition to regularly occurring business meetings, the Association hosts major events such as the annual Redbud Festival, an annual yard sale, and an annual Holiday Bazaar. In addition to such fundraising events, the volunteers coordinate events for community enjoyment such as 2024’s Holiday Social and a Chili Cook-Off in early 2025.
